Health, safety & site rules (all visits)

These points apply to every appointment, including EICR testing.

Safe isolation

To ensure everyone’s safety, the power will be disconnected during testing. We rely on your consumer unit being correctly labelled; if it is not, we cannot be held liable for the accidental shutdown of incorrect circuits. Please save all work and shut down sensitive electronics before we arrive.

PPE & safety footwear

We do not remove our safety boots — they are mandatory PPE for electrical work and must stay on for insurance and compliance. We usually carry disposable over-shoe covers if you would like an extra layer of protection for your floors.

Commercial waste

Waste produced during electrical work is classified as commercial waste. We do not remove it unless specifically quoted; we will bag it for your domestic disposal unless agreed otherwise.

Workspace prep

Please clear obstructions from sockets, lights, the consumer unit, and loft hatches. We cannot move heavy furniture. Keep pets and children in a separate room while testing is in progress.

Landlords, agents & multi-unit testing

Access & discounts

Discounted rates for multi-tenant properties are based on a single, predefined testing session. We require full access to all areas (every bedroom, cupboard, and outbuilding) during this window.

Voiding discounts

If we cannot gain access to a room or unit, requiring a return visit, the multi-unit discount is voided. Subsequent visits will be charged at our standard individual rates.

Keys

Please ensure keys are functional and ready upon arrival. Time spent rectifying key issues or waiting for access is billable.

Making the day easier

The ‘flask’ tip

Power is usually cut within minutes of arrival. If you need your morning caffeine fix, please make a cup or fill a flask just before we get there!

Internet

Routers will be off during parts of the test. Ensure mobile devices are charged and you have a data plan ready if you are working from home.

EICR — what to expect on the day

Access & the “guided tour” (the 100% rule)

  • The initial walkaround. To save time, we highly value a ‘guided tour’ from a resident. Once we’ve assessed the fuse box, walking through each floor with us helps identify all socket locations, fans, and lights, ensuring nothing is missed.
  • Total access. We need to enter every single room that has power, including lofts, basements, garages, and sheds. If an area is out of bounds, please notify us beforehand.
  • Solo testing. After the initial walkaround, we will roam the building independently. Please note we will need to return to the consumer unit frequently between tests.

Fire detection & safety (for tenants / landlords)

  • Detector checks. We will inspect all hard-wired fire detection equipment. This includes verifying that detector heads are in place, are within their 10-year lifespan, and operate correctly via the test button.
  • Compliance. We also ensure detectors are present in the appropriate locations to meet current safety regulations for the property type.

The testing process (safety & tech)

  • Intermittent power. Expect the power to go on and off frequently. Do not consider power ‘stable’ until we give the final all-clear.
  • The insulation test. We send high-voltage signals through the wires. To prevent damage, every device must be unplugged. You can speed up the process by unplugging devices (including chargers and USB sockets) before we arrive!
  • Timing. Tests typically take between 30 minutes and 4+ hours. We recommend allowing a 4-hour window.

Faults & dangers (C1 / C2)

  • Immediate danger (C1). If we find a ‘Code 1’ danger, we are professionally obliged to isolate it immediately. Repairs will be discussed with the person responsible before work begins.
  • Further investigation. Faulty equipment or poor readings may require a follow-up visit.

The ‘human’ element (completion)

  • Leaving it right. We aim to leave everything as we found it. If we’ve missed a plug or a switch, please tell us! We are happy to correct it immediately.
  • Final resident check. Once we finish, please do a quick walk-around. Most importantly, confirm your freezer is running. Your satisfaction is our priority.
