The Problem
You've invested in smart bulbs - Philips Hue, LIFX, or similar - but when you use your existing dimmer switch, they buzz, flicker, or refuse to dim. It's frustrating: you've spent on 'smart' and it's making things worse. This is one of the most common smart-home headaches.
Tech Explained
Think of a traditional dimmer as a tap that chops the water flow on and off very fast (phase control). LED and smart bulbs use electronic drivers that expect a clean signal - they don't play well with that chopping. The result: buzzing, flickering, or the bulb staying full-on. The fix is either a compatible trailing-edge dimmer or - often better with smart bulbs - keeping the circuit always-on and using the bulb's own app/voice control.
The Thanet Angle
Older houses across Thanet often have leading-edge dimmers from the halogen era. In Margate and Ramsgate, we see a lot of retrofits where smart bulbs have been added without changing the switches. The solution is usually a simple dimmer swap or a bypass module - and we do plenty of these.
ROI & Benefit
Swapping to LED-compatible dimmers or fitting smart switches costs 50-150 per circuit. Compare that to the frustration of buzz, shortened bulb life, or having to rip out smart lighting. A small upgrade protects your smart investment and improves the experience every day.
