Your RCD trips in the middle of the night with nothing obvious on. No storms, no new appliances - just darkness. This is often called 'ghost tripping', and it has real, diagnosable causes.

The Symptom

"The power goes off at 2 AM for no reason. Nothing's on - no kettle, no TV, nothing. I reset the RCD and it might stay up for a week, or trip again the same night. It's random and frustrating." Sound familiar? Customers describe it as the RCD "having a mind of its own" - tripping when the house is quiet and nobody's doing anything.

The Detective Work

An electrician uses systematic fault-finding: insulation resistance testing (megger) to check for leakage to earth, earth leakage clamp meters to measure steady-state leakage, and RCD trip-time testing to confirm the device operates correctly. If the RCD is sensitive but healthy, the fault is in the installation - often damp, condensation in outdoor lights, water ingress in outside sockets, or degraded insulation in older cables. Coastal salt air accelerates corrosion in external joints. A process-of-elimination test (unplug everything, reset, then add circuits one by one) helps isolate the circuit. Thermal imaging can reveal warm spots from intermittent faults.

Thanet Grid Note

Older parts of Margate and Ramsgate still have properties with outside lights and garden sockets that were installed before modern IP ratings. Salt spray and high humidity from the coast can cause moisture to creep into fittings - security lights and shed supplies are common culprits. A trip at 2 AM often coincides with heavy dew or condensation settling on damp fittings.
