Behind the Scenes
Most people never see the paperwork that goes into a safe electrical installation. When a Part P registered electrician completes work, they do not just wire and test - they certify, notify Building Control, and create a paper trail that protects you and your property. That behind-the-scenes process is what makes "registered" different from "can do wiring".
The Details
Part P is the section of the Building Regulations that governs electrical work in dwellings. Not all electrical work needs notification, but work in bathrooms, new circuits, consumer unit replacements, and outdoor installations typically does. A Part P registered electrician (through NICEIC, NAPIT, ECA, or another Competent Person Scheme) can self-certify and notify - you do not have to contact Thanet District Council yourself. Non-registered electricians must use the Council's Building Control process, which is slower and often more costly.
When you use a registered electrician, you receive a certificate (Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Works Certificate) and a Building Compliance Certificate. That paperwork proves the work meets standards - and it is what insurers and solicitors ask for when you sell or make a claim.
Jargon Buster
- Part P - The part of the Building Regulations that covers electrical safety in homes.
- Competent Person Scheme - A government-approved scheme (e.g. NICEIC, NAPIT) that registers electricians who can self-certify work.
- Notifiable work - Electrical work that must be reported to Building Control; a registered electrician does this automatically.
The Insurance Angle
If an electrical fire or fault is traced to uncertified or non-compliant work, your insurer may refuse the claim. Using a Part P registered electrician and keeping certificates proves the installation met approved standards. Many insurers and mortgage providers now expect to see compliance certificates for work done after 2005.
Local Building Control
In Kent, Thanet District Council is the building control authority for Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, and the wider Isle of Thanet. Part P registered electricians notify the Council electronically - you do not need to apply separately. If you use an unregistered electrician, you would have to engage the Council directly and pay their fees; approval can take longer.
