Hot Tub Power
Seasonal & Safety Safeguard 5 min read

Hot tubs draw a lot of power. Running one from an extension lead is not just against the rules - it is dangerous. Here is why a dedicated circuit is essential.

Local Context

With summer in Thanet comes hot tub season. Whether you are in Westgate, Broadstairs, or Ramsgate, gardens and patios see more use. It is tempting to run a hot tub from an extension lead through the kitchen window - but hot tubs typically need 32A or more. Extension leads cannot safely carry that load. They overheat, melt, and can start fires. Even "heavy-duty" or "waterproof" extension leads are not designed for continuous high-current loads.

Myth Buster

Myth: A waterproof box or "outdoor" extension lead makes it safe for a hot tub.

Fact: Waterproofing does not prevent overheating. The cable inside the lead is still too thin for the current a hot tub draws. Overloading causes heat buildup - and heat causes fires. Hot tubs require a properly installed dedicated circuit with the correct cable size, RCD protection, and an isolator. No extension lead, however robust, can replace that.

Roy's Checklist

Actionable steps you can take:

  • Never run a hot tub from an extension lead - even temporarily
  • Check your hot tub's power rating (usually 32A or more) before purchasing
  • Plan for a dedicated circuit before delivery; installation typically needs a day
  • Ensure the circuit is RCD-protected and has a lockable isolator within reach
  • If you already have a hot tub on an extension lead, disconnect it and arrange a proper installation
