A burning or hot-plastic smell near your consumer unit is a serious warning sign. It usually indicates overheating - from loose connections, overload, or faulty equipment. Do not ignore it.
Danger Level: High (Call Us Immediately)
Call us immediately - do not delay. This may indicate an urgent safety risk.
The Symptom
"There's a weird plastic or fishy smell near the fuse box. It's not strong but it's been there a few days. Should I be worried?" Or: "I smelled something burning last night - I think it was coming from the cupboard where the fuse box is." Customers often downplay it until prompted. The smell can be intermittent, especially when certain circuits are loaded.
The Detective Work
An electrician will isolate the supply if safe to do so, then inspect the consumer unit for signs of overheating: discoloured terminals, melted plastic, or charring. Thermal imaging can reveal hot spots. Each circuit is tested for overload, loose connections are checked, and terminations are tightened to the correct torque. Cable sizes are verified. The cause may be a single loose connection on a heavily loaded circuit (e.g. cooker, shower) or an undersized cable. Remediation can range from retermination to circuit redesign or consumer unit replacement.
Thanet Grid Note
Older consumer units in Margate and Ramsgate - especially those with plastic enclosures and push-in or clamp terminals - are more prone to connection deterioration. High humidity near the coast can accelerate corrosion. If the smell is strong or you see smoke, switch off the main isolator and call us immediately.
