Behind the Scenes

Behind every safe electrical installation is a thick book of rules - BS 7671, the UK Wiring Regulations. The 18th Edition, with its periodic Amendments, sets the standards electricians follow. Most homeowners never open it, but the changes trickle down: better consumer units, surge protection, and clearer rules for modern installations. Understanding the basics helps you know what to expect when work is done.

The Details

The 18th Edition of BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) is the current standard. Amendment 2 (2022) and Amendment 3 (2025) brought updates including: mandatory surge protection (SPD) in many domestic installations, requirements for consumer unit construction (e.g. metal or non-combustible enclosures for certain installations), and clearer guidance on RCD protection. Existing compliant installations are not automatically wrong - but new work and upgrades must meet the latest rules.

When you have a consumer unit upgrade or new circuit installed, your electrician designs to the current amendments. You will see the result in the installation itself - and in the certificate that confirms compliance.

Jargon Buster

  • BS 7671 - The British Standard for electrical installations; often called the Wiring Regulations.
  • SPD (Surge Protection Device) - A device that protects circuits from voltage spikes (e.g. from lightning or switching).
  • RCD (Residual Current Device) - A safety switch that cuts power when it detects current leaking to earth, reducing shock risk.

The Insurance Angle

Insurance companies increasingly expect electrical work to meet current standards. A consumer unit upgrade or new circuit installed to Amendment 2/3 demonstrates due diligence. If a claim arises, having certificates that reference the latest regulations supports your position that the installation was properly maintained.

Local Building Control

Thanet District Council, like all Kent authorities, expects notifiable electrical work to comply with BS 7671 as amended. Part P registered electricians certify to the current edition. When you hire a registered electrician in Margate, Ramsgate, or Broadstairs, their notification to the Council includes confirmation of compliance.
